Results of Interviews for Vacancy on United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit

On April 7, 2021, the VWAA's Judicial Screening Committee interviewed sixteen candidates for a vacancy on the United States Court of Appeal for the Fourth Circuit occasioned by Judge Barbara Milano Keenan’s decision to take senior status as of August 31, 2021. The results of the screening interviews and additional information about each candidate can be found in the letter issued by the Virginia Women Attorneys Association on April 16, 2021.


Judicial Screening Interviews for Anticipated Vacancy on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit

The Virginia Women Attorneys Association’s Judicial Screening Committee will conduct interviews of applicants for the anticipated vacancy on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Interviews of applicants for this vacancy will be conducted virtually via Zoom on Thursday, April 8, 2021.

Candidates interested in applying should submit an application to Maureen E. Carr and Kristi Cahoon Kelly, Co-Chairs of the Committee, by March 31, 2021 by: 

  1. Downloading the application as a PDF and emailing the completed application to mcarr@beankinney.com and kkelly@kellyguzzo.com; or
  1. Completing the application electronically and listing mcarr@beankinney.com and kkelly@kellyguzzo.com in the field for question #4.

Congratulations to Judge Melissa Friedman and Judge-Elect Heather Ferguson!

The VWAA congratulates the Honorable Melissa W. Friedman on assuming office on November 30, 2020 as a judge of the 23rd Judicial Circuit Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in Roanoke.  The General Assembly has, during this year’s session, now certified her full six-year appointment.  The VWAA also congratulates Judge-Elect Heather P. Ferguson on her election to the 23rd Judicial Circuit Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in Roanoke. They will bring the number of women judges on the Roanoke Juvenile and Domestic Relations bench to four out of five.   Both have been members of the Roanoke Chapter of the VWAA before their elevation to the Bench. 


Judicial Screening Committee Members Needed

The Honorable James P. Jones, United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia, has announced that he will assume Senior status on August 30, 2021. As such, pursuant to the By‐Laws of the Virginia Women Attorneys Association (“VWAA”), the VWAA will empanel a Judicial Screening Committee to interview and consider candidates for the judicial vacancy. The Committee will consist of at least five VWAA members.

Congratulations to Judge Tameeka Williams!

The VWAA congratulates Tameeka Williams, who will begin her first full term as a Judge of the General District Court in Norfolk, Virginia, on April 1, 2021. Ms. Williams has served as a Director on the Board of the VWAA and as a substitute judge for the last several years, and we are excited for the Norfolk community to have her on the bench.
