On August 5, 2022, Nancy Reynolds of the VWAA Roanoke Chapter was sworn in as a Director for the National Conference of Womens Bar Associations Board. The NCWBA is an Association for associations representing 35,000 women attorneys. The VWAA is a proud member and honored to see one of our own leaders serve on their Board.

Ms. Reynolds is a member of VWAA Roanoke Chapter and is serving as the 2022-2023 State Treasurer for the VWAA and a co-Chair of the Diversity Initiative Committee. She was also the recipient of the 2022 VWAA President's Award for her passion and dedication to women's development in law.

Below is a list of upcoming events in 2022: 

A Meeting of the Membership on August 18, 5:00 pm, at the Green Goat.

On September 29 at 5:30 pm we will host a Meet ‘N Greet with our local legislators at Billy’s, 102 Market Street, Roanoke, VA 24011. 

We will have the Annual Judicial Reception on December 1 at 6:00 pm. The location is to be determined.

Finally, the Roanoke Chapter is working with Kate Reese to host a local You Be The Judge program for Spring 2023 and is planning a CLE program that will include a trip to a winery.

President Rachel Robinson honored past Presidents Janet Cho and Margaret Hardy for their leadership, particularly through the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 17, 2022, the VWAA hosted a luncheon panel exploring expectations for women’s appearance and attire in the courtroom and the law firm. Our moderator Shemeka C. Hankins brought together Justice Cleo E. Powell, Judge Linda Bryant, Judge Roxie O. Holder, and Judge Tameeka Montgomery Williams to share their observations and personal experiences to touch on issues of implicit bias, discrimination, and the intersection of race, gender, and cultural norms. The Virginia Women Attorneys Association, Northern Virginia Chapter’s Judicial Screening Committee will conduct interviews of applicants for the anticipated vacancies on the FAIRFAX COUNTY GENERAL DISTRICT COURT.  Interviews of applicants for the Fairfax County General District Court vacancy will be conducted on May 10, 2022.

The VWAA  Judicial Screening Committees interviewed seventeen (17) candidates via Zoom or Teams for the vacancy on the Supreme Court of Virginia created by the retirement of the Hon. William C. Mims.  An additional eleven (11) candidates who participated in the application process for the Virginia Court of Appeals and/or prior Supreme Court of Virginia vacancies were given the opportunity to maintain their prior VWAA rating and opted to do so.  The results of the screening interviews and additional information about each candidate can be found in the letter issued by the Virginia Women Attorneys Association on March 18, 2022.

On February 28, 2022, VWAA Hampton Roads and Regent Law Career Services hosted a luncheon panel event celebrating and learning from promoted female attorneys in our community. Attendees, both virtual and in-person, heard stories, lessons, advice, and wisdom from the Honorable Lisa M. Lorish of the Virginia Court of Appeals, the Honorable Helivi L. Holland of the Suffolk General District Court, Ellis H. Pretlow of Kaufman & Canoles, and Sarah McCoy of the Virginia Port Authority.

The Prince William Chapter’s annual winter retreat was held at Moose Manor at Lake Anna in January 2022. The women attorneys enjoyed rest, relaxation, and revelry.

We are so grateful for our members’ generosity in making the holidays special for children in our community. In this year’s toy drive, we were able to donate toys and gifts to 8 children in Norfolk Social Services and Menchville House in Newport News. We love this annual tradition and look forward to making the holiday season brighter again next year.

The Prince William Chapter of the VWAA sponsored a Holiday Party with Vanderpool Frostick and Nishanian. Through the generous donations of our members and guests, we were able to donate hundreds of dollars of supplies and gift cards for families in need at the SERVE Family Shelter.
